Michelle's contractions started early this morning. She sat in bed, in the dark, hoping they'd disappear.

Two hours later, I woke up, and we began timing the contractions. It didn't take long to discover that the contractions were coming at regular ten-minute intervals. Still, we waited and monitored for another hour. At 5 in the morning, we called the doctor.

"Go the hospital," Michelle was told. We hadn't planned on this -- we're still five days away from our scheduled C-section date. Michelle packed an overnight bag, and we showered and changed. I ate breakfast; Michelle was told to abstain from food or drink in case she needed to go into surgery.

We waited until Owen woke up. A few minutes before 7, his bedroom door opened, and he stood in the dark with his stuffed bunny, hesitating before venturing out into the hall. "Why are the lights on?" he asked.

I scooped him up, and we explained to him that we were headed to the hospital. "Daddy will be back tonight, but mommy will probably be staying in the hospital for a few days."

"But then I will be lonely."

After hugs, kisses, and more explanations, Owen allowed us to leave him at home with his grandparents. Michelle and I drove off to the hospital, ready to welcome a new kid into this world.

Two hours later, Michelle was released from the hospital, having been injected with some drug I can't spell in order to stop her contractions. We were given the boot, and told to come back on the 26th (or earlier, if the contractions start up again).

Word of the day: ANTI-CLIMACTIC.
