This weekend perfectly captured how dramatically our lives will soon change. Last night, we had the tasting menu at Fifth Floor. Tonight, Michelle made dinner while I put together the baby’s crib.

Despite assurances from the Lullaby Lane sales associate that assembly would take just half an hour, I spent the better part of my evening piecing together the crib. The hardest part? Putting wheels on the damn thing. I still can’t figure out why a bed needs wheels. (That is, unless you have a racecar bed like the one '80s pre-teen heartthrob Ricky "The Ricker" Schroeder had on "Silver Spoons.")

In a way, assembling the crib felt strangely momentous. Gradually, it dawned on me that I was putting together my son's first bed. I tightened and re-tightened every last screw and fastener on that thing, and when I was done, I felt like a real dad for the first time.
